Is it necessary to install arc fault detection devices?

The electrical designer/installer is best suited to provide advice on the installation of AFDDs.

In the current edition of the IET Queen Union cabling standard, BS 7671:2018, the installation of AFDDs is recommended, but the customer may choose to omit them. However, this decision must be based on consideration of the relevant risk and safety factors versus the cost of installation.

It is worth considering AFDDs if there is an increased risk of fire, such as. Premises with sleeping accommodation, e.g. houses, hotels and hostels. Places with a fire risk due to the nature of the materials processed or stored, e.g. warehouses of combustible materials. Places with combustible building materials, e.g. wooden buildings.

Structures that spread fire, e.g. thatched buildings and wood-framed buildings. Places at risk of irreplaceable property, e.g. museums, listed buildings and objects of sentimental value.

It may also be worth talking to your insurance company, to see if they would pay out in case of fire if the AFDDs were not installed as recommended.

Is it necessary to install an AFDD on each circuit?

In some cases, it may be desirable to protect certain final circuits and not others, but if the risk is due to fire-spread structures, for example, a wood-framed building, the entire facility should be protected.
